Newborn FAQ's

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BOOK A NEWBORN SESSION?

Today!  LOL.  I recommend giving me at least 3 months notice when booking a newborn session.  This allows for more flexibility in holding a date for you.

WHAT IF MY BABY DOES NOT SLEEP?

This does happen from time to time, and when it does I make the best of it.  Babies that are awake typically can not be posed.  They wiggle and squirm, making positioning (and keeping them there) almost impossible.  If your baby is content and awake, I can use wraps to keep them still and capture their sweet faces.  I do love a good newborn silly face!

HOW OLD SHOULD MY NEWBORN BE FOR THEIR SESSION?

Newborns are best photographed between the age of  5 - 9 days.  The first week of life is when babies are the sleepiest and most flexible.  These sweet, curled up, squishy poses are easiest when baby is new.

CAN MY OLDER CHILDREN BE IN SOME PHOTOS?

Absolutely!  I love sibling love.  Cuddle up, give hugs and kisses.

CAN YOU DO THAT CUTE "CHIN IN HANDS" POSE FOR MY BABY?

You know the pose - everyone knows that pose.  It's actually called the "frog" for obvious reasons!  Not every baby can do this pose.  It requires flexibility that not every baby has.  Most breech babies can do this pose without an issue, while others won't have anything to do with it!  I can certainly attempt this pose upon request but if I feel that your newborn is not tolerating the position well, I will move along to something more comfortable for him/her.

HOW IS THE "FROG" POSE DONE?

The number one question about this pose is "How do you get the baby to stay like that?"  This image is a composition, which means it is two images blended together into one.  The baby has hands on him/her the whole time.   Two photos are taken and merged together in post processing.  The image above is the completed edit from two compositions.

HOW LONG DOES EACH SESSION TAKE, AND HOW MANY PICTURES WILL I GET?

Each newborn session is booked for two hours.   In this time you are offered a variety of backdrops and outfits from which you can chose that will be incorporated into the session.  Time for feeding, crying and pooping is taken into consideration and usually does not take up too much time!  If for some reason, your newborn is having an "off" day and requires a little bit more cuddling I am prepared to take a little extra time to make sure we get enough images.  The number of images really do depend on how well the session goes, but I usually get around 25.  Completed galleries are usually forwarded to you within two weeks.

WHAT IF MY BABY NEEDS TO STAY IN HOSPITAL?

If your baby needs an extended hospital stay you have two options.
One: opt for an in hospital photo session.  Clearance from the hospital staff would be required.  During this session the baby would not be posed as in studio, but would be photographed as he/she is in the Intensive Care Unit or hospital crib.  Poses with parents would be done at the comfort of the baby.
Two: If baby is a preemie, most times we are able to do a newborn session upon release from hospital.  A baby who is born a month early will still be "newborn" when he or she is a month old!

WHAT SHOULD MY BABY WEAR TO YOUR STUDIO?

Please dress your baby in a loose fitting sleeper and if you need to put an undershirt on your baby, please make sure it buttons at the front.  (instead of the ones that go over the head).  Loose fitting clothing will not cause wrinkles/marks on the skin - which in turn makes for less editing for me and a quicker turn around time for you with your images!

WHAT SHOULD THE PARENTS WEAR TO THE STUDIO?

I encourage parents to dress light, or in layers when the weather is cold outside.  My studio gets up to a balmy 28 degrees.  Nice and toasty for baby, but not so much for parents!  Dress light.  If you want to be in some pictures with your baby, I suggest light colours (tans, whites)  These colours are best to keep images looking soft.

CAN WE BRING OUR OWN PROPS?

Absolutely!  I love incorporating your love, passions and interests into your newborn session.  Please give me notice though, prior to your session so I can plan for the time needed to do your prop pose.
